Photo Essay on Fathers

September 15, 2014 by Robert Franklin, Esq.

Here’s an excellent photo essay on fathers (Huffington Post, 9/10/14). As the lead-in paragraph says, we’re so inundated with portrayals of fathers as stupid, incompetent, lazy, brutal and uncaring that sometimes we just need to be confronted with the everyday truth about fathers. That truth is that the overwhelming majority of fathers are there for their kids and their families, providing the things that only fathers can. Look at these photos and tell me kids don’t need their fathers, that it’s “no harm/no foul” when a divorce court removes a fit and loving father from his children’s lives. We know that’s not true and wish the judges knew it too. For all the countless downsides to being a father in this culture that savages dads at every turn, they still soldier on.

Much data show that men are now doing far more of the active, hands-on parenting of children than ever before despite there being little recognition of the fact by courts or legislatures. That means these men are heroes, champions who take on one of life’s most important jobs with no certainty their efforts will be rewarded and a high probability they’ll be tagged as deadbeats or abusers. Good for the Huffington Post for letting us see some of their efforts.

Thanks to Paul for the heads-up.
