Now is the time for action! Make your voice heard!
September 22, 2017 by Robert Franklin, Esq, Member, National Board of Directors, National Parents Organization
Ohio Representative Sarah LaTourette (R, District 26), has just put out a co-sponsor request form to her colleagues in the Ohio House of Representatives for the NPO-sponsored bill to create a presumption of equal shared parenting during temporary orders. Passage of this bill will be an important step toward the promotion of equal shared parenting in Ohio.
We need to have as many Ohio representatives as possible sign on as co-sponsors. I’m delighted to report that, within a half hour of Representative LaTourette putting out the call for co-sponsors, Three Ohio representatives contacted Representative LaTourette’s office to ask to sign on as co-sponsors. These legislators are: Rep. Theresa Gavarone (R, District 3), whose law practice deals with these sorts of cases, Rep. Jim Butler (R, District 41), and Rep. Jeffrey Rezabek (R, District 43).
Rep. LaTourette’s legislative assistant informed me that "this is the fastest response I’ve had on a co-sponsor request, so I imagine we’ll continue to gain supporters." But that will be true only if we act quickly and forcefully.
WHAT TO DO:
Find out who your state representative is. You can do that here using the Member Search function. You’ll need your ZIP+4, which you can find here.
- If your representative is one of those who has already signed on, please call their office or email them to thank them for signing on as co-sponsors of the bill.
- If your representative is NOT one of those who has already signed on, it is even more important that you call their office or email them, urging them to sign on to this bill as a co-sponsor.
I’m attaching a document with information on the importance of this bill, which is modeled after a bill in Kentucky that passed both houses of the Kentucky legislature unanimously and is now the law in Kentucky.
Do this now! The deadline for a representative to sign on as a co-sponsor is September 28. Your legislator needs to hear your voice now. Don’t wait. It takes only a few minutes.
If we fight, we win. If we stay quiet, we lose.
