Last week I posted a piece on the article by an Australian law firm that seeks to re-invigorate the moribund notion that very young children having overnight visits with their fathers impair their emotional/psychological development. After Richard Warshak’s analysis of the existing literature on the subject, signed onto by 110 social scientists from around the world, such an opinion is without merit. I asked Prof. Linda Nielsen to comment on the recent Australian article, which she did as follows:
"Based on the empirical studies on infants’ attachments to their parents, the benefits of highly involved fathering during the first few years of a child’s life, and the 7 studies that have investigated the links between overnighting and very young children’s well-being, there is no reason to postpone overnighting for infants and toddlers. This is the consensus of 110 international experts who endorsed the paper by Richard Warshak. The only article cited as the basis for Mondaq’s essay was written by Robyn Sexton, an Australian judge, who is not in a position to assess or to summarize the social science research on this topic."

And, speaking of Judge Sexton, who was the sole source for the Mondag article, I’ve learned that she and Jennifer McIntosh are thick as thieves. They’ve put on seminars together and seem to have the same anti-equal parenting agenda. Great minds think alike, apparently. Weak ones, like the lawyers who wrote the Mondag article, follow.
