While Father’s Day stands as a day to honor fathers, the unfortunate reality is that every day of the year, our nation’s family courts continue to marginalize the role fathers play in the lives of their children. In fact, courts award sole custody to one parent, typically to the mother, while reducing the other parent, usually the father, to “visitor” status nearly 80 percent of the time when parents split. Fortunately, we have a common sense solution to this problem: shared parenting. Please join me this Father’s Day in supporting efforts underway in nearly half our nation’s states that seek to advance shared parenting — the equal-time child custody arrangement — as the new post-divorce status quo. Fathers are not equal. And society pays a price for this, especially children.
To demonstrate this point, consider the scenario of just one dad. Until his divorce, a father I know well did 60 percent of the parenting. He dressed his kids and got them off to school, cooked dinners and took them to the doctor. Although he asked for joint physical custody, he got the “standard possession order” – every other weekend with his children. This is the outcome in over 80 percent of divorces today. Read more…

With Father’s Day fast approaching, we here in the Working Dads space thought it would good to turn a spotlight on the need to reform our nation’s family courts, which continue to marginalize the role fathers play in the lives of their children by ordering sole custody, usually to mothers, in more than 80 percent of cases.
