By Ned Holstein, MD, MS, Founder and Chairman of the Board, National Parents Organization
I am delighted to announce that Steve Hitner, the key mover and shaker behind the successful effort to reform the alimony laws in Massachusetts, is joining the National Parents Organization team, effective immediately.
At first, Steve’s main job will be to promote the new Massachusetts custody bill that was put together over the past two years by a Working Group appointed by outgoing Governor Deval Patrick (on which I served). This bill is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to improve custody decisions in the family courts. It is not often that we get such a wide diversity of interest groups signing on to the same bill; moreover, we believe we will enjoy strong support in parts of the Legislature. There is so much opportunity right now that we cannot let this pass without giving it a 100% effort. That is why we have brought Steve on board.
I am hoping that as time goes on, Steve will become available to work with our members in other states as well.
Steve is masterful at bringing people with divergent interests together to achieve a good outcome. He proved that in Massachusetts, where he engineered a unanimous vote in both the House and Senate in favor of alimony reform. He did this with tenacity, commonsense, plain language, respect for all, and humility. He was able to build grassroots support and pressure for reform through his members, and also to develop strong personal relationships with legislators and other influential people.
Let’s talk about the grassroots effort for a moment. Steve inspired his members to educate their legislators on the need for reform by sharing their horror stories and asking for their support. For Steve to be effective in his new role with us, he will need the active involvement of our membership in the same way.
Steve will be traveling the Commonwealth meeting with you to explain how you can gain the support of your legislators. And he will also be talking to the legislators in an effort to lobby their support.
Let’s get together to support Steve’s efforts with energy and enthusiasm. We have an unprecedented opportunity for success!
