As I celebrate Utah’s new shared parenting law, words that influenced our nation’s Founding Fathers stand out in my mind. The power to direct the education and upbringing of children belongs to both parents, not just fathers, wrote 17th Century English philosopher John Locke in Chapter 6, titled “Of Paternal Power,” in his Second Treatise of Civil Government. Today, I’m proud to say that due to a law that took effect last week, the state of Utah is not only closer to honoring the basic liberty interests upon which our nation was founded, our government is also working to strengthen families.
