Fathers & Families Supporters Deluge S.C. TV Reporter over Calling Low-Income Dads ‘Deadbeats’

Charleston, SC WCSC Television “Live 5” reporter Harve Jacobs repeatedly uses the anti-father slur “deadbeat” to describe low-income dads struggling with their child support burdens in his recent piece “Economy lands more deadbeat parents behind bars.”

Fathers & Families supporters have deluged Jacobs with letters telling him to stop calling low-income dads “deadbeats.” To send Jacobs a letter, click here.

Paradoxically, despite Jacobs’ repeated use of “deadbeat,” most of his story does quite decently acknowledges the problems faced by low-income child support obligors. For example, Jacobs writes:

Charles Washington was making good money driving a truck, but when the economy went south, his workload and pay also suffered.

“I couldn’t afford to upkeep my household and pay child support at the same original rate,” he said.

Washington then got into an accident and found out there was a warrant out for his arrest. “I fell behind and here I am in jail.”

A judge gave Washington a one year sentence. He also lost his commercial driver’s license. “I want to pay. I can’t find a job and with the economy down, it’s really really hard,” he said.
