Los Angeles, CA–A recently uncovered letter from Albert Einstein to his former wife Mileva Maric indicates that Maric was interfering with communications between Einstein and his children. According to the UK Daily Mail:
A bitter letter from the genius Albert Einstein to his estranged wife shows that he was just as concerned about the rights of fathers as the scientific wonders of the world. The recently uncovered hand-written two page correspondence to first wife Mileva Maric accuses her of not passing on his letters to his children. He discusses maintenance to the family he has left which he states will be 5,600 Marks, paid quarterly. The letter, in German, is dated 12th December 1914, but the couple were not divorced until Valentine’s Day 1919. The theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize winner famed for his theory of relativity married Mileva Maric on 6th January 1903. They had three children, a daughter, Lieserl, whose fate is unknown, and two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. After they wed, Einstein called Mileva ‘a creature who is my equal and who is as strong and independent as I am’. That proved true as the pair split up rather acrimoniously as the letter suggests. In it he sends his greetings to his children and adds: ‘As long as Albert has not answered my letter, I must assume that it was not given to him. Otherwise I would write to him again.’ And in a lengthy postscript he writes: ‘Greetings from me to the children do not seem to be passed on, otherwise they would have sent greetings to me over the course of time. ‘It is therefore actually pointless for me to renew them each time.’ And on the subject of maintenance he writes: ‘I’ve already explained to you, I’ll send maintenance for you and the children in quarterly installments of at least 5,600 Marks as long as my income isn’t substantially reduced.’ After divorce he married his first cousin Elsa, who had nursed him through an illness. They had no children but together brought up Margot and Ilse, Elsa’s daughters from her first marriage. The letter is now to be sold by International Autograph Auctions at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel at Heathrow on Saturday and is set to fetch £2,000. Richard Davie, from the auction house, said: ‘The letter shows the frustration Einstein has because he believes his wife is shielding his children from him’…
